It would still be a sellout even if you didn't sell your tickets ;-)
I mean stuff comes up at the last minute or you forget about an already planned activity which could prevent you from selling your tickets at the last minute. I do agree with your point that quality opponents and experience does matter. However, if a school (any school) is going to increase its potential pool, then it helps if those people had already experience the product in person at some point in time. Even if VT does improve its opponents and Lane Stadium experience, it still may not be enough to increase the pool particular with people who have never experienced a VT home game in person.
What else does VT have in its bag of tricks to convince those people especially the ones who live several hours away from Blacksburg? I ask because I believe the way VT is structuring itself I don't believe as many "regular students," which excludes the Corps of Cadets in this context, are as interested in attending VT athletic events. If they never attended a VT home game in person as a student, then how likely will they be to attend one after graduation? For the record, I'm not saying VT is doing it the right or wrong way in terms of its structure. It is something that the Athletic Department needs to consider/factor in when it is creating its strategy (assuming it is even creating a strategy as @saret would say).
